Extensive Reading Movement
The Extensive Reading Movement is a community-driven literacy initiative based in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, Ghana. Our mission is to promote literacy, build confidence, and inspire a lifelong love for reading among students, in partnership with schools, teachers, community leaders, and the Ghana Education Service.
Launched on Thursday, 25th June 2026 in the Central Tongu District, the movement has grown into a well-structured and progressive initiative that drives meaningful change by transforming lives and strengthening communities through school reading clubs, book drives and donations, teacher training on extensive reading methods, and community literacy outreach.
The Extensive Reading Movement is administered through an Integrated Board–Executive Governance System that ensures accountability, transparency, and effective oversight. This governance structure supports calculated decision-making while enabling operational efficiency and responsible management of resources, including donated books and partner contributions. Through clear leadership roles and collaborative administration, the movement maintains strong institutional integrity and effective programme implementation.
As part of its vision to create meaningful community impact through innovation, capacity development, and community-centered initiatives, the movement has identified key priority areas that guide its strategic interventions: school reading clubs, book drives and donations, teacher training on extensive reading methods, reading festivals, reading corners in schools, and community literacy outreach. Through these focus areas, it fosters tactical partnerships with schools, teachers, community leaders, and the Ghana Education Service to enhance programme effectiveness and maximize impact. By working closely with stakeholders, volunteers, donors, and development partners, the movement delivers sustainable, results-driven initiatives that respond directly to the needs of students and communities.

As a community-driven initiative committed to literacy and development, the Extensive Reading Movement seeks to nurture the next generation of confident readers and lifelong learners who will contribute to community and national development. Through its school reading clubs, book drives and donations, reading festivals, reading corners, teacher training, and community literacy outreach, the movement works to strengthen reading culture, support teachers, and drive meaningful social transformation in collaboration with schools, community leaders, and the Ghana Education Service.
Since its launch on Thursday, 25th June 2026 in the Central Tongu District, the movement has experienced steady growth in its reach, attracting students, teachers, volunteers, and partners from diverse backgrounds. Through its expanding reading clubs, book donation drives, and collaborative projects, it continues to broaden its network and engage individuals and institutions to foster knowledge exchange and sustainable literacy outcomes. Its flagship Main Reading Festival, held annually on 8th September to mark International Literacy Day, brings schools and communities together to celebrate the joy of reading.
Through sustained commitment, strong governance, and strategic partnerships, the movement has built a solid reputation as a trusted initiative dedicated to integrity, accountability, and measurable impact. It remains a preferred partner for schools, teachers, community leaders, volunteers, and development partners committed to advancing literacy and inclusive learning for present and future generations — inspiring minds, building readers, and transforming futures.
