Extensive Reading Movement
the Extensive Reading Movement is a community-driven literacy initiative based in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, Ghana. It was launched on Thursday, 25th June 2026 with a simple but powerful conviction: that every child deserves the joy and opportunity that reading brings. The movement exists to promote literacy, build confidence, and inspire a lifelong love for reading among students, working hand in hand with schools, teachers, community leaders, and the Ghana Education Service.
Our tagline — "Inspiring minds. Building readers. Transforming futures." — captures the heart of everything we do. We believe that a child who learns to read is a child who learns to dream, to question, and to grow. Through strategic programmes and collaborative partnerships, the movement turns classrooms into spaces of curiosity and transforms stories into stepping stones for confident, capable learners.
The movement is administered through a collaborative, community-centered structure that brings together head teachers, classroom teachers, community leaders, and officers of the Ghana Education Service. This shared leadership ensures accountability, transparency, and effective oversight, enabling efficient delivery of programmes and responsible stewardship of donated books and resources. Through clear roles and cooperative coordination, the movement maintains strong institutional integrity and effective implementation of its literacy initiatives.
As part of its vision to create meaningful community impact through innovation, capacity development, and community-centered action, the movement works within key priority areas that guide its activities: school reading clubs that make reading a joyful daily habit; book drives and donations that put quality storybooks into children's hands; teacher training on extensive reading methods; reading festivals that celebrate the written word; reading corners in schools; and community literacy outreach. By working closely with stakeholders, volunteers, donors, and development partners, the movement delivers sustainable, results-driven initiatives that respond directly to the needs of its communities.

As a community-driven literacy initiative committed to impact and development, the Extensive Reading Movement seeks to nurture the next generation of confident readers who will become the change-makers of tomorrow. Through its reading clubs, book drives, teacher training, reading festivals, and strategic partnerships, the movement works to strengthen schools, support educators, and drive meaningful transformation across the Central Tongu District and beyond.
The movement holds its Main Reading Festival every year on 8th September, International Literacy Day, when partner schools and communities come together to celebrate reading through storytelling, performances, and book-sharing. Since its launch on 25th June 2026, the movement has attracted pupils, teachers, volunteers, partners, and community members from diverse backgrounds, and its programmes continue to grow and reach even more young readers each season.
Through sustained commitment, strong community partnerships, and the dedication of its volunteers and supporters, the movement is building a solid reputation as a trusted literacy institution guided by integrity, accountability, and measurable impact. It remains a preferred partner for schools, teachers, publishers, volunteers, and organizations committed to advancing literacy and lifelong learning for present and future generations.
